John Northrup recently took part in filming for the upcoming docudrama Still The Jukebox Junkie, written, directed, and produced by Corey Frizzell. The film follows the life and career of 90s country star Ken Mellons.

Northrup played an important role in Mellons’ journey, writing songs with him, managing him, and standing alongside him as both a colleague and a friend. His long-standing connection with Mellons gives him a unique perspective on the artist and the moments that shaped his career.

During the interview, Northrup also reflected on the memorable chapter in country music history surrounding the radio airplay battle over the song “Paint Me A Birmingham.” He was on the front lines with Mellons during the well-known competition for airplay between Mellons’ version and Tracy Lawrence’s, a story that remains a fascinating part of the era.

His firsthand memories help bring this chapter of Mellons’ career to life, adding depth and authenticity to Still The Jukebox Junkie, which highlights the people, stories, and moments that helped define Mellons’ path in country music.
